What Is Conduit?

Conduit is a protective pathway for electrical conductors. It consists of tubing or raceway that routes wires through walls, ceilings, exposed areas, or underground spaces. Conduit may be rigid or flexible and can be made from metal or nonmetallic material. Its size, fittings, and routing must suit the wiring installation.

Key Takeaways About Conduit

  • Conduit protects conductors from physical damage.
  • Fittings connect sections and maintain a continuous pathway.
  • Conduit is not the same as the wires inside it.

How Conduit Works

Two hands use wire cutters to strip colored wires from a metal electrical box on a wooden workbench

Conduit works by enclosing or guiding electrical conductors along a planned route. Installers join sections with fittings, then pull or place the conductors through the pathway. Rigid conduit holds a fixed route, while flexible conduit can accommodate movement or a tight connection near equipment.

Electrical work may use metal conduit, plastic conduit, or other approved raceway materials suited to the location. The pathway must have enough room for the conductors and must connect properly to boxes, panels, and equipment. Junction boxes provide access where conductors change direction or connect. Wire gauge identifies conductor size, while conduit describes the protective route around those conductors.

From the Service Electric team

When we install conduit, we plan the route before placing conductors. We check bends, fittings, support points, and the connection to each box or enclosure. Our team also checks that the pathway remains accessible where the wiring design requires access.

Conduit in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner adding an outdoor circuit may have conduit routed from an electrical panel to an exterior outlet location. The conductors run inside the conduit, while fittings connect the pathway to the panel and outlet enclosure.
