What Is a Photocell?

Photocell is a light-sensitive electrical control that switches a connected lighting circuit according to surrounding brightness. It commonly turns outdoor lights on at dusk and off at dawn. A photocell helps automate security lighting without a manual switch, timer, or daily adjustment. Its operation depends on light reaching the sensor.

Key Takeaways About Photocell

  • Light sensing distinguishes a photocell from a standard wall switch.
  • Proper placement helps the sensor read outdoor brightness accurately.
  • A photocell is not the same as a motion sensor.

How Photocell Works

Hands wire a blue-topped electrical switch while a screwdriver tightens terminals on a wooden workbench

A photocell changes the control signal to an outdoor light when surrounding brightness crosses its operating threshold. During daylight, the sensor keeps the lighting circuit off. As natural light fades, the control closes the circuit and allows the light to operate. The reverse action occurs as daylight returns.

Sensor placement affects performance because nearby fixtures, covered locations, and reflected light can change what the device detects. A photocell may control one fixture directly or operate with a lighting control system. A motion sensor responds to movement, while a photocell responds to ambient light. Technicians check the sensor, wiring, connections, and connected fixture when the lighting cycle does not match outdoor conditions.

From the Service Electric team

When we install security lighting, we check that the photocell has a clear view of the surrounding light. We inspect its wiring and connections, then confirm that the fixture responds as outdoor brightness changes. We also look for nearby lights that could affect the sensor reading.

Photocell in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner wants exterior lighting to operate automatically around a detached garage. A photocell can activate the security light as evening arrives and switch it off after daylight returns.
