What Is a Service Entrance?

A service entrance is the point where electrical power enters a building from the utility system and connects to the building’s main electrical equipment. It includes the service conductors, meter connection, main disconnect, and related enclosure. This equipment establishes the boundary between utility-supplied power and the wiring that distributes electricity throughout the property.

Key Takeaways About Service Entrance

  • It marks the connection point between utility power and building wiring.
  • The service entrance includes equipment before power reaches branch circuits.
  • A service entrance is not the same as the entire electrical panel.

How Service Entrance Works

Service entrance equipment receives power from the utility connection and routes it through the meter area toward the main disconnect. The main disconnect provides a controlled point for shutting off power to the building. Service entrance conductors carry power between the utility connection and that main equipment.

The service entrance also includes the enclosure, grounding connection, and bonding details that support the electrical distribution system. During an electrical service upgrade, the existing entrance may need changes so the incoming conductors, meter equipment, disconnect, and panel work together correctly. The service entrance ends where the building’s distribution system begins.

From the Service Electric team

When we work on an electrical service upgrade, we inspect the service entrance as a connected system. We check the incoming conductors, meter equipment, disconnect, enclosure, grounding path, and connections before planning changes. This helps us identify problems that may not be visible from inside the panel alone.

Service Entrance in Practice: A Real-World Example

A homeowner planning an electrical service upgrade may have a service entrance that cannot support the property’s present electrical equipment. The work may involve coordinating the incoming conductors, meter connection, main disconnect, and panel so power reaches the building’s circuits correctly.
