What Is a Cable Clamp?

Cable Clamp is a fitting that secures an electrical cable where the cable enters an enclosure, box, panel, or device. The clamp holds the cable in place, protects the cable jacket from abrasion, and helps prevent pulling force from reaching internal wire connections. Cable clamps may attach with threads, screws, or pressure.

Key Takeaways About Cable Clamp

  • A clamp grips the cable jacket at an entry point.
  • The fitting limits cable movement near wire terminations.
  • A cable clamp is not the same as a wire connector.

How Cable Clamp Works

A cable clamp grips the outer jacket of a cable at the point where the cable enters an enclosure. The grip keeps the cable from shifting and reduces stress on the conductors and their terminations. The clamp must match the cable type and the entry opening so the jacket stays secure without damage.

Some clamps fasten through a threaded opening, while others attach with screws or compress around the cable. The fitting works with an enclosure to create a stable cable entry. An installer checks the clamp position, tightness, and cable jacket contact during wiring work. A strain relief fitting performs a similar cable-support function in some equipment, but the correct choice depends on the enclosure and cable design.

From the Service Electric team

When we install wiring, we check that each cable clamp matches the cable jacket and enclosure entry. We position the clamp so cable movement does not transfer force to terminals, splices, or other internal connections. Our team also checks for jacket damage and secure attachment during the installation.

Cable Clamp in Practice: A Real-World Example

During an electrical wiring installation, a cable enters a junction box through a cable clamp. The clamp holds the cable jacket at the box wall, so movement outside the box does not pull on the connected wires.
