What Is MC Cable?

MC Cable is an electrical wiring assembly that combines insulated conductors with a flexible metal armor jacket. The armor protects the conductors from physical damage and provides a grounding path when properly connected. Electricians use MC Cable for exposed or concealed wiring where its factory-assembled construction suits the building layout and installation method.

Key Takeaways About MC Cable

  • Metal armor protects insulated conductors from physical damage.
  • Proper fittings secure the cable and maintain grounding continuity.
  • MC Cable is not the same as flexible metal conduit.

How MC Cable Works

A man uses pliers to strip a cable with colored wires on a wooden workbench

MC Cable carries electrical current through insulated copper or aluminum conductors inside interlocked metal armor. The armor adds mechanical protection while the cable remains flexible enough to route around equipment, ceilings, and partitions. A connector attaches the armor to an electrical box or enclosure.

Electricians select fittings that match the cable and the box. The fitting holds the cable securely and supports the grounding path through the armor or a bonding conductor. Flexible metal conduit may look similar, but conduit usually receives individual wires at the job site. MC Cable arrives as a finished cable assembly with conductors already inside.

From the Service Electric team

When we install MC Cable, we check the jacket, fittings, terminations, and routing before connecting the circuit. Our team also verifies that each box connection is secure and that the grounding path remains continuous. We match the cable assembly to the equipment and the commercial installation conditions.

MC Cable in Practice: A Real-World Example

A commercial tenant improvement may use MC Cable to connect lighting, receptacles, and equipment from junction boxes to branch circuits. The cable can route above a suspended ceiling and enter metal boxes through listed fittings.
