What Is an LED Driver?

An LED Driver is an electrical device that converts incoming power into the controlled current or voltage an LED light needs. The driver helps the light operate safely and consistently. Depending on the fixture, the driver may be built into the light or installed as a separate component nearby.

Key Takeaways About LED Driver

  • An LED driver regulates power for an LED fixture.
  • Driver compatibility affects dimming and fixture performance.
  • An LED driver is not the same as a fluorescent ballast.

How LED Driver Works

A person tests an LED driver on a wooden desk beside a laptop and multimeter

An LED Driver receives power from the electrical circuit and changes it into the form required by the LED fixture. The driver controls electrical output as the light operates. Some fixtures contain the driver inside the housing, while others connect to a separate driver mounted above a ceiling or in an accessible enclosure.

Driver specifications describe the input power, output characteristics, and compatibility with controls. A matching dimmer switch must work with both the driver and the fixture. An incompatible control can cause flickering, limited dimming, or unwanted noise. A driver may also be replaced when an integrated LED fixture develops a power-related fault, although the complete fixture may need replacement when the driver cannot be serviced separately.

From the Service Electric team

When we install LED lighting, we check the driver type, wiring, mounting location, and control compatibility. We also inspect connections and confirm that the driver suits the fixture and available circuit. These checks help separate a driver issue from a problem with the switch, wiring, or LED module.

LED Driver in Practice: A Real-World Example

A recessed LED light in a home may use a remote driver above the ceiling. During installation, the driver is connected to the branch circuit and placed where its wiring and enclosure remain accessible for future service.
